Roeh Israel, "Shepherd of Israel," is a Messianic Jewish Congregation in Jerusalem. We call ourselves “Messianic” because we are followers of Yeshua who accept Him as Messiah. By “Jewish” we mean that the congregation follows the cultural pattern preserved in the Synagogue over the generations by the providence of God, and its normal outreach is to the Jewish community.

The original idea of the congregation was to return to the pattern of the community of believers in Yeshua in the first century. That congregation was composed of Jews who were diligent in their observance of the Torah, who lived as an integral part of the Jewish community, and who believed in Yeshua as Messiah. The pattern in the early community was that of cultural pluralism - Jews who remained Jews and non-Jews who remained non-Jews who worshiped the Lord together.

The doctrinal position of the Congregation is that the inspired Scriptures are the final and ultimate authority for life and faith in the congregation. Much of Jewish tradition and Halachah are observed, insofar as it does not contradict the written Word. The various creeds of the Church are not regarded as binding on us but rather the written Word of God as understood in its original context.

The Shabbat service of the congregation is composed entirely of the Shabbat morning synagogue prayers (Shacharit HaShabbat). These are read directly from an ordinary Orthodox Jewish siddur (prayer book). The prayers and psalms are read at an ordinary pace without the pressure to finish all that is included in the prayer book. Many of the prayers and psalms are sung and led by the Cantor of the congregation. The weekly Torah portion is read from one of the congregation’s Torah Scrolls, and we have several Aliot (call ups), in which each person recites the regular blessings before and after the Torah reading. We normally also read a selected portion from the Prophets and the New Testament. After the Torah reading, there is a brief sermon, which is usually based on the Torah portion for that week.

Rabbi Marcelo, David Katz and Matheus Guimaraes

In 1996, Marcelo Miranda Guimarães, a Jewish believer and former CEO of a German company, started a ministry called TEACHING FROM ZION (Ministério Ensinando de Sião), devoted to provide high quality bible teaching faithful to the Jewish context of the Scriptures. Through a great variety of Messianic Jewish literature (most of it written by Marcelo), and local and correspondence schools, Teaching from Zion seeks to achieve a double fold objective: announce the good news to the Jewish population of Latin America and help the Church to restore its biblical roots, banning from its midst all forms of anti-Semitism and receiving her Jewish brothers with open arms. One year later, Marcelo and his friend from Israel, Joseph Shulam, founded the first messianic Synagogue of Brazil, the Har Tzion Messianic Jewish Synagogue. Joseph Shulam and Netivyah Ministry from Israel play a key role in the developing not only of Har Tzion Congregation in Brazil, but also in the developing of Messianic Judaism in Brazil and other countries of Latin America.

Located in the third largest city of Brazil, Belo Horizonte, Har Tzion Messianic Synagogue is growing each year. Today with almost 600 members, it is a reference for other Messianic Congregation in Brazil and worldwide. Always committed with the restoration of the 1st century Church, Har Tzion provides a healthy environment for Jews and gentiles to worship together, learning how to study and practice the scriptures in a more Jewish and original way.

With dozens of ministries where its members can get involved in different activities, Har Tzion Congregation has a great concern for its social responsibility. Besides the dental clinic that the Congregation operates, offering free dental treatment for its members and for needy people all over the city, there is now physiotherapy and psychological treatments offered to the community with no costs. "When God blesses us with members who are professionals in different areas, we make sure that these members will help other members and the community around us. By providing the infrastructure they need, these doctors, dentists, physiotherapists and psychologists have a chance to bless hundreds of people every month. The social responsibility of a Congregation located in a 3rd world country is more than a philanthropic work, it's a mitzvah!", says rabbi Marcelo Miranda Guimaraes, leader of Har Tzion Congregation.

More and more Jewish descendents are coming to faith and becoming part of Har Tzion. Some of them were almost converting formally to Judaism, others were willing to give up the dream to restore their identity. But in the environment of the Congregation they are able to receive knowledge and the most important thing: to be discipled. That is why it is now offered to these Anussim members a "Teshuvah" course, made and designed to teach these Jewish descendents how to live a Jewish lifestyle as a Messianic Jew, where they learn how Yeshua is and must be evidenced in every single Jewish tradition.

CATES local class in Belo Horizonte

Ensinando de Sião, in partnership with the MJBI (Messianic Jewish Bible Institute) and with Netivyah in Israel, started in 2008 its distance learning theological school called CATES (Ensinando de Siao Advanced Theology Center). With more than 130 students enrroled, the CATES course deals with theology focused in the 1st century Jewish context and Congregational leading training. Jewish and non-Jewish believers from academic circles are becoming more and more interested in this school, and many Universities are inviting the local team of teachers to speak about theological Jewish subjects for their graduate and undergraduate students.

Founded in February 2002 with the blessing of Marcelo Guimarães and Joseph Shulam, leaders of the ministries Teaching from Zion-Brazil and Netivyah-Israel, respectively.

Under the leadership of Jair Amaral e Silva, the Sar-El Congregation is part of the movement for the restoration of the Church, with the main objective to return to the biblical and Jewish roots of the faith, staying connected to Jerusalem through the faith of Yeshua.

We celebrate the biblical feasts, including Shabbat.
We meet on Saturday mornings for the Shacharit (Torah study) at 10 am.
Address: Avenida João Gualberto, 1731 – on the 1st floor of The Tower Building Store – Juvevê, Curitiba, PR, Brazil.

Roeh Israel Building

Update: We will be posting images and simulations of the new building soon, stay tuned!

Netivyah has been fighting the zoning and planning boards of the city of Jerusalem in order to get a building permit for more than ten years. We must expand our building because at this time there are many times when the place is full and there are people who have to stand all through our service that normally is at least two hours long. The expansion that we are planning is to enlarge the auditorium to hold our entire congregation, and to add an additional floor that will serve the needs of our congregation, and also to strengthen the foundation of the building since it was built in the 1920's and there is no iron incorporated into the structure and if there would be even a slight earthquake the building might not stand.

Netivyah has won a judgment in the district court of the State of Israel and the judge actually gave us all that we have asked for and more. The opposition appealed the judgment of the district court and the case was heard in the supreme court of Israel on October 11th, 2011. We are currently awaiting the verdict.

The building project includes the expansion of the auditorium and the remodeling into a proper Synagogue, an addition of a safe-room (bomb shelter on every floor) a basement for storage, and a new floor with library, offices, and classrooms. The whole project will cost about 1,500,000.00 US dollars (if the dollar keeps its value). Right now we have 400,000.00 dollars for the building project. We need to raise as soon as possible at least 1,100,000.00 dollars. The issues in this case are not only financial and real-estate issues. The main issue is our presence and equality and civil rights before the law of Israel. Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East and it has freedom of religion and conscience written in the declaration of the State of Israel. We have to win this battle for the sake of the future of the State of Israel as a democracy and also for the civil rights and building rights of Jewish Disciples of Yeshua in this land.

Please pray for this project and do your utmost best to support it financially. We hope that as soon as the Supreme Court of Israel rules in our favor we will be able to start the building project and build the first Synagogue of Jewish Disciples of Yeshua in the city of Jerusalem for near 2000 years.
