Jerusalem Prayer List July 29, 2016
By Joseph Shulam
This week the reading in the Synagogues around the world is called, Matot. “Matot” is from the book of Numbers chapter 30:1-32:42, and the name is taken from the first verse of the reading: “Then Moses spoke to the heads of the tribes concerning the children of Israel, saying, “This is the thing which the LORD has commanded:””(Num. 30:1). The word “Mate” means “Staff” – the same word is used for the wooden staff of Moses, and also for the staff of the generals in the Israeli Army. In the English translation of the verse it was rendered “the heads of the tribes.” The first major topic that is dealt with in chapter 30 is the issue of what oath or vows a person speaks out of mouth. In short according to text a man is obligated to keep his vows, his oath to man or to God are obligatory and sacred. This is what the Lord says: “If a man makes a vow to the LORD, or swears an oath to bind himself by some agreement, he shall not break his word; he shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.”
Now the next issue that the Torah brings is not politically correct these days. There is a difference in obligation of a woman to her vow and her oath from that of a man. If a woman a daughter or a wife made a vow or promised a promise and her father hears about it the same day – her father or her husband can annul the vow or the promise that the woman made. You ought to read the text in Numbers 30 in order to understand better the details. There are of course many explanations why God made this difference between the obligation of a man and a woman. The bottom line is that it was done for the protection of a woman. I personally wish that there were a way in which a man could have his oath to God and to man annulled. There is no way to annul man’s vow or promise before the Lord. For this very reason Yeshua gave this instruction to HIS disciples: “Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.’ 34 But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 But let your “Yes’ be “Yes,’ and your “No,’ ‘No’. For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.” (Matt. 5:33-37)
Yeshua is doing something very rabbinical in this teaching. He is building a fence around the commandment of God. God said in the Torah if you take make a vow or take an oath you must keep it. There is no way that you can be delivered from that oath or vow if you are a man. Yeshua comes and says, don’t take an oath or make a vow at all. Just be faithful to your words and if you promise something keep it, just say “Yes” or “No.” This is all that is necessary for people who are honest and have integrity. If more is required that means that there is no trust and no confidence in the faithfulness and trustworthiness of the person you are about to do business with. In this case it might better not to do business with people that their words and promises are not trustworthy.
The second point that Yeshua brings is that most of the time that people make a vow or take an oath they hang their vow or oath by someone greater than themselves. People say: “By God, I will do this!” – “By the temple of God” – “By Heaven . . .” In fact they could swear by their own Mother or Father if they wish, but it does not make their words worth more than just a simple “Yes” or “No” of a person who is honest and trustworthy.
This teaching of the Lord is often time ignored and “Words” and promises often don’t mean much or carry a serious obligation in our days. I have had elders of a church who sat in a meeting with me and made promises, and when they went home and told their wives what they committed to, their wives changed their mind. They called me back and said, “Joseph it would be better for you to forget what we decided in the elders meeting! It is not going to happen.” – I said, “but you made this commitment and I have it recorded on tape.” The next day these same elders actually resolved the problem on a personal basis and not and not from the congregation. They were honest man and they kept their promise unofficially without everyone, including their wives, knowing it.
As you can see from this Torah portion, Yeshua is like a good Rabbi making a fence of protection around the commandment to keep us on the safe side and prevent us from falling in disobedience to God’s command.
Well, I suppose that all of us from every corner of the World ought to pray for the United States of America. The dye is cast and there are two contenders running for the presidency of the most powerful nation in the world! Powerful now, and no one knows for sure what will be in 10 or 50 years from now. As disciples of Yeshua we do have global concerns and interests and therefore we all ought to pray for the USA and of course for Europe and the world. We are seeing a scourge on the world today that is hitting every corner and killing, bombing, exploding, and destroying, innocent people from Boston to Kabul and from Buenos Aires to Munich. This scourge is not one organization it is a demon with seven heads called “Jihadist Islam” or “ISIS” or “El Queada” or “Hamas” or “Jaabat El Nusra” or “Hezbollah.” No matter what the name is the goal of these terrorist organizations is all the same. It is to impose their fear and their Sharia laws of Islam on the whole World over. Their words and promises don’t mean anything because in their laws it is permitted to deceive the infidel. [“Quran (2:225) – “Allah will not call you to account for thoughtlessness in your oaths, but for the intention in your hearts” The context of this remark is marriage, which explains why Sharia allows spouses to lie to each other for the greater good. Quran (3:54) – “And they (the disbelievers) schemed, and Allah schemed (against them): and Allah is the best of schemers.” The Arabic word used here for scheme (or plot) is makara, which literally means ‘deceit’. If Allah is supremely deceitful toward unbelievers, then there is little basis for denying that Muslims are allowed to do the same. (See also 8:30 and 10:21)” This quotation is taken from: Taqiyya about Taqiyya (Raymond Ibrahim).]]
I believe that a sincere prayer and an honest cry to the Lord will be heard and God will intercede for the righteous and godly people of this world. We must remember God’s mercy as it is exhibited in Genesis 18 when Abraham argued with God about the fate of Sodom. If there were 10 righteous people in Sodom – the Almighty ONE of Israel would have spared Sodom from total destruction. Can we teach and encourage ourselves and our brothers and sisters to strive for deep faith and faithfulness unto God’s righteousness! Can we take upon ourselves the burden of joy to stand as guards for our families, cities, and countries, by striving and seeking the righteousness of God? Let us at least take this desire and this holy task before the Lord in prayer: Pray like this: “Lord, I do know your great love and mercy for your children. I know dear Lord my weaknesses and shortfalls and bring them before you daily begging for your mercy and forgiveness in Yeshua’s precious name. I ask you Lord for only one thing for the rest of my life. Help me Lord to live the righteous life that you have given us in Yeshua. Exemplify your goodness and righteousness in my life, in my actions in my words, and above all in my devotion and dedication to you. In the holy name of Yeshua – Amen!“
Netivyah needs your prayers and your continued intercession and support. There are so many challenges that we must face in Israel these days. Our nation needs to unite; our government needs to focus on the real issues and challenges that Israel faces. The “world” is not becoming a friendlier place for Israel or for the Jewish people. The values of our modern World are not compatible with the values in the Word of God. We are witnesses that the “world” of today calls “Evil” good and “Good” is called evil. The values and principles of God’s Word are considered bad and the humanistic post modern libertine values that have no idea of sin or right from wrong are hailed as progress and civilized. On the same note Israel is defined as a “terrorist state” and the real terrorists who kill and torture and burn and hang innocent people are acclaimed and given praise as great heroes. Please pray for Israel and the government of Israel and ask for God’s protection for Israel and not only Israel but the whole Middle East. Everything around us is falling and collapsing in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Saudi Arabia, and just name it – hate is winning in every direction that you look. Christians wake up!
Pray for Marcia she will be traveling to the USA on her own in the end of August. She will stay in the USA until the end of November. She needs God’s help and protection and healing and guidance every day and every moment.

The topics of these seminars will be from two main topics, Leviticus and King David. In Japan I will also be holding a seminar on Eschatology (End Time issues). All three of us that will be traveling together need your prayers for safe travel, good health, effective teaching, the ability to inspire and motivate and strengthen our brothers and sisters in Asia, and also be strengthen and blessed by them.

We have brothers and sisters who are not physically sick, but they need the hand of God’s blessing on their lives and business: Michael Knezevich in Portland, Laurel S., and please add to this prayer all those people whom you know and ask the Mighty God of Israel and Yeshua our Messiah to show their mercy and grace on these fine disciples of Yeshua. Please don’t forget our dear brother Raymond and his family in Singapore. Pray a special blessing on Raymond’s work and especially for his zeal for truth and a faithful walk with the Lord and blessing of Israel.
Especially pray for the new congregation in Vitoria, E.S., Brazil and their leadership, and for the Teaching from Zion Ministry in Brazil, and the Har Zion Congregation in Belo-Horizonte, and for the Sar EL congregation in Curitiba.
Keep praying for Jerusalem! Pray that every plot and scheme of the enemy will be discovered and the authorities in Israel will know how to handle it and stop the terrorist before they succeed to damage and kill innocent people. This is true for Jerusalem, for the USA, for Germany, England, France, and in fact in every corner of the World. The best blessing for the World and for the Arabs and Muslims in the world is for the security organizations to discover and stop the terrorist before they succeed in doing terrorism. As you can see from last weeks’ events in Nice, France, and in Germany, and Bagdad, and Damascus, terrorist can use knives, trucks, bombs, and even just simple stones. God can guide those who protect the law and the people to the nests and hiding places of those who organize terrorism and stop them cold right in their own places.
God bless you all and I bless you for joining the fight for righteousness, truth, love, and hope, all in preparation for the return of our Lord! Keep us in your prayers and enable Netivyah to continue serving the Lord God of Israel and the Messiah, the people of Israel both Jews and Arabs, and people of good faith around the World.
